Shifts—Annotate shift(s) clearly. Then write a sentence or two explaining the nature of the shift(s) and
what effect they produce in the poem/passage. Discuss any devices that are connected with the shifts.

*CRUX—Locate the Crux [The Central Point and/or Climax] of the poem/passage, and write it out below.
This is the section that leads to the most obvious statement of overall meaning. Be sure to quote it
accurately, and explain why it is of central importance.
